I don't know if you are aware of the origin of the poppy for use in this way, but the "poppy movement" was inspired by a beautiful battlefront poem "In Flanders Fields." This was written in France during WWI. I think that if even a few people are reminded of the beauty of the symbolism behind the poppies, they might feel differently when they are next offered one.
